FAQ

 

     Here are answers to some of the most common questions about personal chef services.

Do you cook for one?

Definitely! If you fly solo, that doesn’t mean you have to eat Lean Cuisine, order takeout, or find time in your busy schedule to plan and cook. Entrees can be frozen in individual portions. For fresh meals, repeating entrees on occasion or having the leftovers for lunch presents the most cost-effective service plan for one.

 
Why can’t you just cook the food at your house and deliver it to me?

Sometimes this would be more convenient for both of us! However, Nova Scotia law mandates that delivery meals be prepared in an inspected and permitted commercial kitchen, which I don’t use. Additionally, you have the added security of knowing and seeing the conditions under which I prepare your food–in your own kitchen.

 

How far will you travel for a client?

I’m based in Mahone Bay, and I haven’t set strict boundaries of my “territory”. I prefer to operate on the South Shore up into Halifax, but if you have other needs, contact me and we may be able to arrange for service.

 

Can I book just one personal chef service date?

Yes. There is never a commitment or requirement to re-book. In fact, I recommend scheduling just one trial service date to start, even if you may need regular service. It’s all about what works best for you.  Ours is a working relationship that develops over time. Maybe you just moved, are busy at the office, have welcomed a new baby, or have another temporary shortage of time. Maybe you’re new to the personal chef concept and just want to give it a try. I can provide customized menus for every scenario, and there’s never pressure to re-book.

  

How far in advance can you cook for me?

It depends on your needs. If you prefer fresh meals from the fridge with lots of salads then weekly or bi-weekly meal preparation would be the best choice for you. If you like the idea of a freezer stocked full of easy to reheat meals then monthly or bi-monthly would be for you. Personal chef service is custom in nature and we can discuss your needs to find something that works if you require more (or less) service.

 

What do I do while you cook?

Anything you want! I’m here to help free up your time. Ideally we’ll have a chance to meet briefly in your home before the date of service so that you’re completely comfortable whether you choose to be home or away while I cook. If you’re home, I ask that you plan accordingly and reasonably limit your needs in the kitchen so that I can proceed efficiently and avoid safety hazards, especially if there are pets or small children in the home. I offer cooking instruction, but it’s a separate service best scheduled outside of your personal chef service days. This will assure that I cook each planned dish within the estimated time frame.

 

My household has conflicting diet preferences–will you cook for us?

Yes. Suddenly vegan teenager? BBQ-loving significant other? I can give you plenty of options to make everyone happy in the same meal, many without an extra cost attached.

 

Do I have to buy the prescribed "eco-friendly" containers?

The containers I’ve selected are both non-toxic and safe for anything from freezing to heating to the dishwasher. They streamline storage and serving and are a worthwhile investment. At this time I’m not able to rent the containers to you, but they are yours to keep and are always stored in your home. If you'd prefer recyclable/disposable storage containers for this service, that can be arranged as well, and are what I use for the first "trial" period meal preparation service.


How long do meals last?
In the refrigerator, meat/poultry/fish entrées should be consumed within 3-4 days of cooking. Many meals can be frozen for longer retention. I will always provide clear storage and reheating instructions.

 

What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule?
If you cancel or reschedule before 7 days of your next slot, it's no problem. However, if you cancel within 7 days there is a cancellation fee of $75. Emergencies and last minute changes will be assessed on an individual basis.

 

Can you make food from our family’s favorite recipes?

Yes, I always take special requests and will cook according to any recipes you provide.

 

Do you buy the groceries or do I?

I will grocery shop for you and bring everything over on the day of cooking. 

 

Where do you do your grocery shopping?

I shop at all major grocery stores depending on the ingredient list, as well as Farmer's Markets and direct from local farmers. I may even use fresh produce from my own garden.

 

Can you teach me how to cook?

Yes, I offer one-on-one instruction for anyone wanting to learn cooking techniques. Cooking classes are offered for groups or individuals separate at separate times from your meal preparation services.

 

Do you offer gift certificates?

Definitely. Who wouldn’t want to receive the gift of healthy meals and more time? Gift certificates are perfect for anyone you know who is strapped for time and/or dislikes cooking. New moms and dads, friends and family recuperating from illness and hospital visits, special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
